 Diving Tour on dolphin island

The Fernando de Noronha archipelago, located 345km from the Brazilian mainland, boasts the best diving spots in Brazil. Fernando de Noronha Island can be reached by plane from either Recife or Natal. The coral reefs and shipwrecks in these waters are home to dolphins, sharks, sting rays, barracudas, sea turtles and moray eels. Naturally you'll also see countless colourful, tropical fish swimming in these waters as well. Even if you're not a certified diver, there's plenty to do here. The main island's 16 beaches are stunning. You can go hiking on one of 8 trails across the island, go on an introductory dive with a professional guide or go snorkelling. The highlight of a visit to Fernando do Noronha Island is a sailing trip to dolphin bay where hundreds of bottlenose dolphins appear at the same time each day to hunt for fish - all year long!

Day 1: Arrival at Fernando de Noronha

After a 1 hour flight from Natal or a 1hr and 20min flight from Recife you'll arrive on Fernando de Noronha Island. Only 1 of 21 islands in the archipelago is inhabited. It has 3000 inhabitants. In 1988 the archipelago was declared a National Marine Park. To help preserve the island, only 100 tourists are allowed on the island daily. Check out our Brazil climate web page for the best time of year to visit Fernando de Noronha.

On average, life on the archipelago is more expensive than in the rest of Brazil since all foreign items must be flown in. Fernando is 1 hour behind Brazilian standard time. Upon your arrival, a transfer will be waiting to take you to Vila dos Remedios, the town where most of the people on the island live. You'll spend 4 nights in a pousada on a basis of board and breakfast. Don't expect to find any luxury resorts here - your accommodation is simple, yet cosy.

Day 2 - 4: Fernando de Noronha - Free Days

Days 2 - 4 on Fernando de Noronha Island are free days for you to do whatever you want to do. If you want to dive, you can expect an average water temperature of 26ºC and 30 - 50 metres of visibility. Two dives a day for two days will cost you approximately £195 per person. Diving locations include the shipwreck at Santo Antonio and the untainted coral reefs at Sueste Bay. There are three renowned diving schools on the island that also have diving equipment for hire. Diving locations vary from a depth of 10m up to 50m. If you would like to get your Padi Open Water diving certification while you're here, we can make the necessary reservations for you. Ask your Travel Specialist for more details.

During one of these free days, you can go on an optional morning excursion to the Baia dos Golfinhos to swim with the dolphins. Check with the reception desk to make sure the excursion is available. You may also see a few sea turtles while you're here since thousands of them inhabit the waters off the island.

Walking trails on Fernando de Noronha Island offer a variety of interesting scenery. If you hike to the top of Morro do Pico you'll have the best possible view of the archipelago's 21 islands. You can also visit Vila dos Remeidios, the most lively town on the island. Stroll through the historic town centre, visit the local museum and then walk over to the Forte Dos Remedios for a panoramic view of the town and the surrounding beaches. There's only one road and it runs straight across the island. A bus travels back and forth from the beginning to the end of the road, allowing you to get off wherever you please. Of course you can always decide to spend these free days on your Brazil holiday just relaxing on the beach. While you're at the beach, you may even see a few dolphins shoot through the waves right before you.

Day 5: Fernando - Recife/ Natal

Today it's time to leave Fernando de Noronha Island and head back to the mainland. Flights back to Recife and Natal generally leave in the afternoon, so you'll have the morning to yourself. Eventually though, the time will come to say goodbye to this little patch of heaven on earth and continue with your Brazil travel.

Before travelling on with one of the other Brazil tours or returning home, you'll spend a night in Recife or Natal. If you can't get enough of the turquoise sea and coconut palms, you can continue enjoying Brazilian beach life with our active Pipa beach trip. You can also go on our self drive Brazil trip past coconut palms and fishing villages.
